WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - School supplies aren't cheap and sending kids back to class prepared can be a real hardship for families already struggling financially.

It's why so many organizations put together giveaways this time of year, like the one through Phillips Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem.

The church gave out hundreds of book bags filled with supplies Saturday to ease that burden on families in need.

The pastor for the church said the event keeps getting bigger and stronger.

"Every year has grown. We have a coordinator, Miss Marcelet Orange who does a marvelous job and every year she raises our bar,” said Pastor Chadarm Strong. “So we are in our fifth year and now we are at the max it seems but she seems has the tendency to go higher but we always match up to it so it has been a great process for us this year"

Organizers turned the giveaway into a full-fledged event with food, activities and health screenings.
