RALEIGH -- Losing a child is by far the hardest thing a parent will ever have to do. Dr. Jeff Brown learned this heartache all too well, when he lost he sweet young 6 year old son Grant, in drowning while at a day camp in Chapel Hill in 2013. But Dr. Grant is now pushing for change, specifically in the way public pools are regulated.

Spectrum News anchor Caroline Blair sat down with Dr. Brown, an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, for a look at the change he’s working to create in North Carolina to help save children’s lives in the future.

Dr. Brown says according to the CDC, some 10 drowning deaths occur each day in the US with children ages 1 to 4 the highest rate. But he said due to loose camp regulations in North Carolina dealing with pools, his son age 6 also lost his life. He’s now asking state lawmakers to ramp up legislation to require camps to have lifeguards on duty at all times.
