WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Wilmington police say an attempt to purchase gas with fake money led to the break up of a multi-state counterfeiting ring.

  • Two brothers arrested after trying to use fake $100 at a gas station
  • The two had a full counterfeiting operation at their home, according to police
  • Suspects linked to dozens of bills from as far away as Florida

Shawn Buzbee, 46, and his brother, 37-year-old Sabe Buzbee, were arrested Monday night after trying to use a fake $100 bill at Speedway on Carolina Beach Road.

Police say the pair had more fake money in their car and a full counterfeiting operation at their home.

The suspects were then linked to dozens of bills that were used as far away as Florida.

"It's good police work that got us to this point. It's patrol officers, veteran patrol officers who relied on their training and experience to get us into that vehicle, get that currency seized, and then notify the right people to handle the investigation," said Cpl. Brandon Reece, Wilmington Police Department.

Police say Shawn Buzbee has a known history of counterfeiting.

He received a $100,000 bond while Sabe Buzbee was jailed on a $40,000 bond.
