WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The amount of rain Wilmington is receiving is causing one family to evacuate their home.

  • The area has received around 24 more inches of rain than average.
  • Gregory Gerlach's home has water up to his waist.
  • More rain is in the forecast in the next week.

"It’s a really scary feeling," said homeowner Gregory Gerlach. "We don't know, honestly. We have no clue what to do."

Gerlach, a Marine Corps veteran, says saving his house feels eerily similar to the work he did while serving his country.

"My mind just kind of goes back to that time frame where it would just be wake up, build sand bags, or help the people pass out food, and go to sleep and then repeat," said Gerlach.

While he has no running water, it's in abundance at his home. The flooding in their backyard is up to his waist.

Gerlach and his dog, Frankie, wake up every morning and think of new ways to manage the standing water. He's made a water pump to push water from underneath the house and sand bags to trap the water, but it's only a quick fix.

"If we get rain, which, like we are supposed to over the next week or so, I'm going to have to leave the house and let nature take its course," said Gerlach.

He lives with his fiancé and their two children who have already evacuated the home and gone to Raleigh. Gerlach says even during Hurricane Matthew they did not experience flooding like this.

His yard is just one place, of many, experiencing flooding from the constant rain.

The area has received around 24 more inches of rain than average.

"With the rain falling so, so fast and heavy on several of these days that we've seen in the past week, you're seeing water tables rising," said New Hanover County Emergency Management Manager Zak Whicker.

Whicker said drivers also need to be careful of flooding roads. It only takes a few inches to move a car, so it's best not to chance it.

As for Gerlach, he's doing all he can to save his family's home.

"Saving the house is the biggest thing," said Gerlach. "I want my children to have somewhere to grow up, and not trading houses every time it rains like this, that's what keeps me going.”
