KENANSVILLE, N.C. – On Monday, James Sprunt Community College held its first ever Admissions Day since the school was founded in 1960.

  • Admissions Day helped prospective students with assistance to apply.
  • School officials: Most students are first-generation college students.
  • Admissions Office can help with assistance.

Administrators said some people applying to the school said that the online process was difficult, so the school did something about it.

One high school graduate, Tywan Wooten, did not know how to go about taking the next step towards college. He said the college's Admissions Day helped him get there by providing assistance he was not able to get at home.

"[They're] just making me feel a lot more confident in knowing that I'm getting everything done correctly," said Wooten. "And that me and my parents, we're really both kind of first timers, so people that are comfortable with doing something that I'm not."

People in Duplin County and beyond were able to come to the event to fill out applications, apply for financial aid and take placement tests all in one day.

The event was inspired by an Army veteran who wanted to go back to school, but was having trouble with the online application.

"We've noticed that a number of -- high number of individuals who apply or may begin the application process, but they don't finish it," said Brian Jones, Associate Vice President of Student Services. "And so that was one instance where we thought, hey maybe there's something we can do to alleviate some of the issues that they're having."

Jones said most of their students are first-generation college students and, while they offer assistance daily, they wanted to make sure their resources were publicized.

As for Wooten, he is taking advantage of this opportunity with the hope of being the first person in his family to graduate from college.

"It's just going to be a huge weight off my shoulders," said Wooten. "Just knowing I can walk out and have everything done with, and know that it's correctly done and I'll be coming to this school."

People who missed the Admissions Day still able to go to the James Sprunt Community College Admissions Office during operating hours to receive the same type of assistance.
