SNOW HILL, N.C. -- The Greene County sheriff says a deputy shot a man after he confronted them with a shotgun.

  • Sheriff said Robert Bigler pointed shotgun at deputies.
  • One of the deputies shot Bigler in the leg.
  • Bigler faces charges once he is released from the hospital.

Greene County Sheriff Lemmie Smith told news outlets deputies went to the man's house Friday for a welfare check.

Smith said 71-year-old Robert Bigler called the sheriff's office to complain about the government and said there would be a "showdown in his yard.''

The sheriff said as deputies talked to Bigler, he went inside his home and came back out with a shotgun.

Smith said Bigler pointed the shotgun at deputies and told them to drop their weapons before one of the deputies shot him in the leg.

Smith said charges would be filed against Bigler when he gets out of the hospital.

The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.
