NORTH CAROLINA -- The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities organization has released a report detailing state and metro area impact estimates for the Trump Administration’s proposal to raise rents for households receiving federal rental assistance. 

  • The Trump Administration has proposed legislation that would raise rents on 4 million low-income households with HUD rental assistance by $3.2 billion.
  • 106,700 HUD assisted households would be affected in North Carolina.
  • Those households would see an average increase in their rent by around $61.67 per month ($740 annually).

North Carolina has 108,400 households, for a total of 230,600 people, who receive Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) rental assistance.

Under new legislation, 106,700 of those households would see an average increase in their rent by around $61.67 per month ($740 annually), including 31,000 elderly people, 30,300 people with disabilities and 103,500 children.

According to Housing and Urban Development officials, 57 percent nationally would not see a rent increase for six years. 

North Carolina metropolitan areas are expected to be affected in the following ways:

  • The Charlotte area has 13,900 HUD assisted households, and 13,700 of them would be affected. They can expect a raise in rent costs by around $66.67 per month ($800 annually).
  • The Raleigh area has 9,400 HUD assisted households, and 9,300 of them would be affected. They can expect a raise in rent costs by around $67.50 per month ($810 annually).
  • The Durham-Chapel Hill area has 7,200 HUD assisted households, and 7,000 of them would be affected. They can expect a raise in rent costs by around $63.33 per month ($760 annually).
  • The Greensboro-High Point area has 11,800 HUD assisted households, and 11,600 of them would be affected. They can expect a raise in rent costs by around $60 per month ($720 annually).
  • The Winston-Salem area has 8,700 HUD assisted households, and 8,500 of them would be affected. They can expect a raise in rent costs by around $61.67 per month ($740 annually).
