PENDER COUNTY, N.C. -- One Pender County neighborhood is looking to charge drivers this Memorial Day weekend if you’re using Cedar Avenue to cut through to the beach.

  • Road considered dangerous because of potholes and reckless drivers
  • Hoping to reduce amount of traffic
  • $5 fee beginning Friday through the weekend

Those who maintain the private road that extends to Driftwood Drive said it has become dangerous because of potholes and reckless drivers.

They are hoping to deter people who would come through on their way to Surf City and reduce the amount of traffic on the road.

“The traffic last Memorial Day weekend was over 4,000 vehicles. Families are afraid to let their kids play in the yards if they live on the roads because of the high traffic,” said Jeff Conerly, a Pender County resident.

For now, the plan is to charge a $5 fee beginning Friday and through this weekend.
