DURHAM, N.C. -- Clarence Birkhead has been elected as the Durham County Sheriff.

Birkhead is a former police chief at Duke University and in Hillsborough.

He's a political newcomer that challenged incumbent Mike Andrews, who had been sheriff since 2011.
