A storm damage survey conducted Monday by the National Weather Service confirmed a brief tornado touched down in Wake County Sunday night.

The tornado hit at 10:35 p.m about five miles to the north-northwest of Wendell.

The tornado's path was less than a mile long and around 100 yards wide.  

Based on damage in the area, the tornado was rated an EF-1 with a wind speed estimated at 87 mph.

Homes in the area sustained minor damage and numerous trees were uprooted.

A stronger and longer-lived tornado was reported earlier Sunday afternoon near Greensboro.

That tornado was rated an EF-2 and did more extensive damage. 

The Greensboro tornado was on the ground for just over 33 miles.
