BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. -- G.V. Barbee Bridge will close later this month for eight months to undergo rehabilitation work.

The bridge, one of only two bridges going to Oak Island, will close from September through May of 2019.

During this time, crews will replace girders, installing a new riding deck and barrier rail.

The entire project is expected to cost about $7 million.

The bridge will be closed to all traffic once the project begins but there will be detours and alternate routes for drivers.

The project is part of a statewide bridge rehabilitation initiative that includes other bridges in the region.
