NORTHWEST, N.C. -- Friends and family are mourning the loss of a police officer in a small Brunswick County town.

37-year-old Michael Morgan died Friday night around 5:30 p.m. from a gunshot wound. Authorities said foul play is not suspected and they do not believe it was intentional.

Morgan served part-time on the Northwest police force. For 17 years Morgan was a full-time employee of what is now Charter Communications, most recently serving as senior security investigator in Wilmington. Those who knew him best said he will be dearly missed.

“Mike was like a brother and not just another employee or another guy,” said Chief Copelen Taylor at the Northwest Police Department.

Morgan’s visitation will be held Friday night from 6-8 p.m. at Andrews Mortuary.
