RALEIGH -- It’s Election Day for some communities across our state as many cities and towns get ready to choose their next mayor and city council members.

In Central North Carolina, Raleigh, Cary, Durham and Fayetteville are holding municipal elections.

Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane is seeking a fourth term. She’s running against Paul Fitts and Charles Francis.

The City of Raleigh ballot also includes a referendum on a $206.7 million transportation bond to improve streets and sidewalks throughout the city.

All eyes will be on the Durham mayoral race since Mayor Bill Bell is not running for re-election after holding the seat for more than 15 years.

Voter turnout for municipal elections is typically much lower than what we see during a presidential election, but election officials in Wake, Durham and Cumberland counties say they saw more early voters than the total number of early voters in the 2015 municipal election.

In the Triad, voters are going to the polls in Alamance, Davidson, Forsyth and Guilford counties.

Polls will stay open until 7:30 p.m.
