WILMINGTON, N.C. – A popular Wilmington coffee shop celebrated its one year anniversary Wednesday.

Bitty & Beau’s Coffee gives people with intellectual and developmental disabilities a chance to thrive in the workplace.

They opened Beau’s Coffee in a 500 square foot space in January 2016. By July, they had renamed themselves to Bitty & Beau’s and moved to a 5,000 square foot building.

They currently employ 40 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Bitty & Beau’s has been featured in People Magazine and on "Good Morning America" and the "Rachel Ray Show."

Owner Amy Wright says it's important to provide opportunities for everyone.

“What we’re trying to do is bridge that gap, and say, there is life after high school and there are great talents that people with intellectual disabilities bring to the job force, and let's tap into that. Let's give them a chance,” said owner Amy Wright.

Wright says she has big plans for the coffee shop this year and will be able share those plans in just a few more weeks.

They’re located at 4949 New Centre Drive in Wilmington.
