Beaked Whale Found On Shore of Bald Head Island

BALD HEAD ISLAND—Officials on Bald Head Island found a dead whale on shore Monday morning.

The Bald Head Island Conservancy said a crew discovered the remains of a beaked whale in the middle of South Beach. The whale was later buried on the beach. They say beaked whales are a rare sight for the region.

The UNCW stranded marine mammal team is working to determine how it died.

Anyone that finds a beached marine mammal is asked to call 911 and the BHI Conservancy 910-457-0089 x 5. People are encouraged to not touch the animal or push it back into the ocean.
