A stationary boundary will remain draped across the region this weekend. Each day we'll see the chance for a few scattered showers and storms.

  • You can see the annual Perseid Meteor Shower on Saturday and Sunday
  • Best viewing time is midnight through dawn
  • Best viewing areas will be out of large metropolitan areas due to lights

With luck, this weekend, by midnight, and through the overnight hours, both Saturday and Sunday, you'll be able to get a glimpse of the annual Perseid Meteor Shower. Generally the best viewing is midnight through dawn. So, Early Sunday and early Monday are the best windows prior to sunrise both of those mornings.

The peak of the Perseid's, some 60 to 70 meteors per hour, will be Midnight Sunday through early Monday.

So why do we see this?  Earth passes through the path of Comet Swift-Tuttle. This weekend will be the time Earth passes through the densest and dustiest area of the comets tail. We've actually been encountering some of the dust since July 17th. Earth will exit the path of Swift-Tuttle around the 24 of the month.

Best viewing will be to get out of large metropolitan areas, and their associated light pollution. So, if you can, head out the the country and away from city lights. Once in a good spot, just sit, look North and be patient. Eventually, if we have partly cloudy skies, you should notice a bit of a show.
