TAMPA, FL -- The Carolina Panthers suffered its fourth straight loss Sunday 24-17 to Tampa Bay. Cam Newton threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns, but he was also intercepted four times, tying a career high. Two of his four picks resulted in 10 points for the Buccaneers.
- Tight end Greg Olsen says he ruptured his plantar fascia at the bottom of his foot.
- In addition, Newton was battling a sore throwing shoulder Sunday.
- The loss drops the Panthers to 6-6 on the season. They travel to face Cleveland next Sunday.
Carolina lost tight end Greg Olsen to an injured right foot early in the second quarter and did not return. It was the same foot he broke last year and at the start of this season as well. In speaking with reporters afterwards, Olsen said the injury was not a break, but rather he ruptured his plantar fascia at the bottom of his foot. Whether the injury will cost him the final four games of the season remains to be seen.
In addition, Newton was battling a sore throwing shoulder Sunday. The same shoulder that required surgery in March of 2017 to repair a partial tear of his rotator cuff. Newton threw 41 times on Sunday and sat out the final play in favor of back-up quarterback Taylor Heinicke as Carolina had to throw the ball 51-yards downfield into the endzone in order to tie the game. The pass fell incomplete to end the game.
Head Coach Ron Rivera refused to speculate on Newton's or Olsen's status going forward, instead said they'd wait to see what the team doctor says.
