A teenager in Durham is recovering after being shot twice by police, officials said Monday morning.

The teen faces multiple charges after allegedly pulling a gun on police and then running from the scene just after midnight Sunday morning, authorities said.

Charges against the 16-year-old include assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and possession of a handgun.

Police said an officer went to the 4700 block of Hope Valley Road, near the intersection with NC-54 in south Durham, for 911 calls about a "car club" in the area racing.

When the officer got there, people started throwing things at him and his car, police said. When the officer got out of his car, the teen ran from the scene, but then pulled out a gun, according to authorities.

"The suspect raised the handgun and was shot by the officer," police said. After being shot, the teen continued to run and got into a car with other people to get away, officials said.

Another officer pulled over the car as it left the area, police said. The teen was taken to a hospital and is listed in stable condition.

The police officer, identified as Corporal R. McQueen, has been with the Durham Police Department since 2006. He has been reassigned as the investigation continues, police said.

The officer’s body camera was on during the foot chase and shooting, according to police. The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
