RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation's Fall Litter Sweep event is underway.

What You Need To Know

  •  The Fall Litter Sweep encourages volunteers to pickup litter

  •  11.3 million pounds of litter was picked up in North Carolina last year

  • Volunteer events will take place throughout the state until Sept. 28

  • Check with your local municipality for litter pickup events

NCDOT hosts the event in the fall and spring in an effort to encourage volunteers to pick up any trash they may see along the state's roadways.

Last year, more than 11.5 million pounds of litter was picked up statewide.

“With the public helping us out with this litter removal, that kind of relieves us and could focus more on the roads," said Sean O’Leary, a NCDOT transportation supervisor. "A lot of resources are being put into today that could be possibly put into something else."

Events have been held all over the state since the litter sweep started on Sept. 14.

The Fall Litter Sweep event ends on Sept. 28.
