CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Birth rates in America are on the decline.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show around 3.6 million mothers gave birth to newborns in 2023, which is around 76,000 less newborns from 2022.

Some families say they're not surprised by those numbers.

Alyssa and Jack Noble got married in 2021.

The couple say they originally planned to have children later, until they discovered a baby was on the way.

The Nobles say one of the reasons they originally planned to delay expanding their family was so they could pursue career and personal goals.

"I think there are a lot of people our age wanting to pursue careers, their own dreams, before they start their own family," Jack Noble said. "We kind of waited a while, too. We wanted to do the same thing a little bit, a few years after marriage, but it was only a year."

"I wanted to play sports and have that freedom," Alyssa Noble said. "I had a lot of things I wanted to do before I got pregnant. But it's been fun living out [my daughter's] dreams. It's been fun taking a pause on what I wanted to do."

The Nobles say they plan on expanding their family. But there are factors they're taking into consideration first.

"Job stability," Jack Noble said. "Where we live, that's important too. A bigger yard, bigger house [with] a lot more room for her to play, especially as she gets older and has another sibling."

A recent report from NerdWallet found many adults are hitting the pause button on parenthood due to financial concerns.

The survey shows 56% of Americans under 60 who don’t have kids plan to not have any children at all. Around 44% of those respondents cited their reason as not wanting children altogether.

However, 31% of those adults said not wanting to be a parent was due to the high costs associated with raising children.
