A 22-year-old man used Snapchat's location feature to track down someone at an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway, according to federal investigators. He now faces multiple federal charges, including two counts of kidnapping.

Evan William Blankenship, of Whittier, North Carolina, forced two people from a parked car with a gun in the early hours of Sept. 28, investigators said. He knew one of the victims, identified as L.P.

"L.P. and a second victim, L.M., were sitting in a parked vehicle at Water Rock Knob Overlook off the Blue Ridge Parkway," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Charlotte. "Blankenship drove his vehicle to where the victims were located and pointed a semi-automatic pistol at them."

The overlook is on the Blue Ride Parkway about 45 miles west of Asheville.

Blankenship allegedly threatened both victims and tried to pull L.P. from the car. Investigators said he hit L.P. in the face and caused temporary hearing loss.

He also fired his gun into the air and pointed it at the two victims, federal officials said.

"L.M. eventually convinced Blankenship to let them go," investigators said.

"L.P. told investigators that she knew Blankenship through Snapchat and believed Blankenship had used Snapchat’s  location sharing feature to find her on the Blue Ridge Parkway," the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Police arrested Blankenship Oct. 11. Federal kidnapping charges carry a sentence of 10 years to life. He is also charged with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm, two counts of assault with intent to commit a felony, and possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
