The Watauga Humane Society decided to offer pet food to all those affected by the shutdown.

The non-profit says it's important to help pet owners so they don't end up surrendering their animals.

"It's unforeseen circumstances and it's not fair for the pets to have to suffer and go without food or without treats just because the resources aren't there with their owner," said director of operations Christy Powell.
