CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Hundreds of people came to Bobby McKeithen's funeral Saturday. The 16-year-old Butler High School student was shot at school Monday.

One person in attendance was Mecklenburg County Commissioner Pat Cotham.

"We can't give you any words that are going to make up for what you've lost, Mrs. Ashley, but I hope you'll feel our presence and our love and our prayers that will comfort your family, but there are no words," she said during the service.

There may not have been exactly the right words, but there was plenty to say about the 16-year-old.

"I want you to know I'm completely heartbroken about what happened on our campus on Monday," principal John Legrand said. "We're going to miss his infectious personality. His love for life. That beautiful smile he brought to school with him every day."

Bobby's girlfriend Anna talked about that smile and that she won't forget the so many things that made him special.

“I know right now you are standing next to me. Telling me to wipe these tears and pick my head up. So from this moment on, everything I do is for you. I’m not going to give up. You will always be in my heart and be my guardian angel. I love you Bobby McKeithen,” she said.

Million Youth March leader Mario S. Black called on the crowd to remember Bobby and to honor his legacy by supporting the students at Butler High School.

"Live your life. Love those around you and laugh as much as possible. It helps on cloudy days such as this," he said.

McKeithen will be buried in New Bern Monday.
