The center wrapped up a major upgrade in 2016, giving them the ability to see all 400 of the traffic cameras in the city on one network, make changes on the fly, and fix signal errors in real time.
Officials say these new features will come in especially handy during the upcoming closure as traffic congestion shifts and some areas, that don’t normally experience congestion, see an increase in heavy traffic.
Jason Toney, signal systems supervisor, said, "When we see where traffic is actually going, and we won't truly know until actually Business 40 closes, we'll see kind of how traffic flows. We predict it will go a certain way but once we actually see we'll be able to monitor our signals and make changes to those signals to help alleviate some of that congestion."
Toney went on to say, "We'll be on high alert here to be able to monitor and see how traffic's going. Our main job here is to move traffic safely. And whatever we can do once we kind of get a feel for how traffic's reacting to the closure we'll try to adjust to that to help compensate."
The Business 40 closure is officially set to start Sunday, November 11, at 8 a.m.
