CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Coleman Montgomery has a lot of screens. However, unlike most high schoolers, they aren't for video games. They're for the news.

  • Montgomery started Gaston Talks, focusing on good news but if something breaks in Gaston County he's on it.
  • Gaston Talks gained a whole new following last month when 6-year-old Maddox Ritch disappeared.

The room of his grandmother's basement has everything in a newsroom. It’s headquarters for the 16-year-old's news website Gaston Talks.

“Right when I get home from school is when I start,” said Montgomery. “I'm just constantly posting things.”

He started the site in May. The focus is good news but if something breaks in Gaston County, he's on it.

Gaston Talks gained a whole new following last month when 6-year-old Maddox Ritch disappeared.

Montgomery was there as the story unfolded.

Despite some initial hesitation from officials, Montgomery talked his way into the police press conferences where he would broadcast them live on Facebook.

“I just want to get the facts first before I publish it out there,” Montgomery said. “I don't like to publish things that aren't confirmed yet.”

He then broadcasted his own updates on Facebook Live. Viewers flocked to the page expressing their appreciation.

Montgomery got the journalism bug early, and he's already learned the essentials of a good reporter.

“I think he's very, very determined, he's very forthright, and he probably doesn't like to say no as an answer,” said Cathy Mabry Cloninger, who has known Montgomery all his life.

The ending of the Maddox Ritch search is one of those stories that can make people lose hope. But when you watch Montgomery, he’s not only trustworthy but gives us a glimpse of the good that's still to come.

“You've never too early to start things,” Montgomery said.
