CHARLOTTE, N.C. –  Electric scooters are the popular way to take the scenic route through the Queen City – getting up to 15 miles per hour. But the scooters are often inches from fast cars, and are a concern to the Charlotte City Council.

  • Councilmembers want more rules for the Bird scooters
  • A 12-month pilot program is in place testing the scooters, which ends in October
  • More than 40,000 free helmets have been distributed for Bird riders

"I just feel like cars should look both ways before they cross the cross-section or walkway. That's where I think the main problem is,” rider Ian Preston said while pausing on a cruise through South End.

Last week, city councilman Larken Egleston saw a man and woman riding scooters on 277 and he has concerns.

"Someone's going to die on one. And I know we can't completely prevent that, but I think we've got to be ready, if not before the end of the pilot program, at the end of the pilot program we need to have something we can put in place quickly,” District 1 Charlotte City Councilman Larken Egleston said.

He wants more rules for where scooters can roll. You can ride them on sidewalks except for a few areas in Uptown. Riders are also encouraged to wear helmets.

The pilot program is set to end in October.

Bird says they have distributed more than 40,000 free helmets to Bird riders through their website and app.

In a statement, Mary Caroline Pruitt, a spokesperson for Lime-S scooters says:

“Safety is our number one priority, and Lime urges riders to always put the safety of others and themselves before anything else when operating any of our vehicles. We instruct riders to practice safe riding using helmets both through notices on the app and on the actual scooter. In order to unlock a Lime scooter for the first time, all riders must go through an in-app tutorial that includes helmet safety. We are constantly developing and implementing tools in the app to further promote safe riding and scooter use. To educate our riders on responsible parking and safe riding, we also released this Lime scooter safety video here, and will continue to explore the ways we can promote safety through both offline and online activations."
