CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The city of Charlotte is one step closer to breathing new life into the former Eastland Mall site.

  • Crosland Southeast and Eastland Community Development has been recommended as the new master developer for the remaining 69 acres of land
  • The proposal is anchored with a soccer academy, housing, hotel, office space and a multicultural market
  • City council's economic development committee will vote on recommendation next month

City staff is recommending Crosland Southeast and Eastland Community Development as the new master developer for the remaining 69 acres of land.

The proposal is anchored by an FC Barcelona soccer academy along with housing, hotel, office space, and a multicultural market.

District representative Matt Newton believes the potential to partnership with FC Barcelona is the catalyst East Charlotte needs right now.

“It takes the development of the site to the next level and I can picture a day where you know we have talent that's is developed, molded right here in the our city,” said Council member Newton.

But there are still some looming questions related to the plans such as, will the city provide any incentives? Will Council sell the land to the development team?

“If this is the direction we're going in then the land needs to be sold as is for the simple fact that we have already put in quite a bit of dollars in,” said Council member Lawana Mayfield.

“East Charlotte has a project and we're not going to blindfold ourselves when we're driving by that site,” said longtime East Charlotte resident Diana McLenure.

City council's economic development committee will vote on recommendation next month, and then it'll go to a full council vote in October.
