BESSEMER CITY, N.C. -- Two people are dead after a car crashed into a restaurant Sunday.

It happened at Surf and Turf Lodge on North 14th Street.

During a press conference Sunday afternoon, officials say one of the victims was 26-year-old off-duty Gaston County Sheriff's Department deputy, Katelyn Self. The other was his daughter-in-law, Amanda Self. Several others were injured as well.

The suspect, Roger Self, is the father of victim Katelyn Self. Authorities say he intentionally drove his car into the restaurant. He was arrested at the scene, and is currently in jail without bond.

There's no evidence of alcohol playing a role at this time.

At a second press conference on Monday, Austin Rammell, the pastor of Venture Church and the representative for the Self family says that Roger Self was suffering from mental illness.

Rammell said he reached out to his family who tried to get him help.

According to Rammell, he suffered from anxiety and depression.

The family left church and went to eat when Self got up. They noticed his car was circling the parking lot and then came through the window.

"Not in a million years would anyone who knew Roger Self would ever imagine this. This is the opposite of who this man is and was he is known for in this community," said Rammell. "He was just confused by it...and that's the state of mental illness. There is nothing rational about a mind that's gotten to an insane place."

A candlelight vigil will be held for those who lost their lives.
