Three candidate threw their names in the race: Incumbent Sheriff Irwin Carmichael, former CMPD detective Garry McFadden and former CMPD officer and Fletcher Police Chief Antoine Ensley.

Of all the issues, the one that seemed to be creating the largest divide between the candidates was the 287g program. The federal program flags jail inmates for deportation proceedings and allows some sheriff's deputies to act as immigration officers inside the jail. Sheriff Carmichael defended the program while both McFadden and Ensley pushed for it to be dismantled.
