CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Many college students are getting ready for graduation. For one UNCC student, it took more than late night study sessions to get her degree.

  • Amanda Ruiz received an Answer Scholarship.
  • Ruiz graduates from UNCC on May 11.

Amanda Ruiz was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease after she graduated high school and she also gave birth to her son, Jayden.

Ten years after the birth of her son, she is getting her degree from UNCC with the help of the Answer Scholarship, which is specifically for moms who are enrolled in college.

Ruiz says with the help of the scholarship, she can show her son that anything is possible.

"I wanted to show him that you have to overcome obstacles, and just because you have a child doesn't mean that you can't do what you set out to do. If anything, that's more of a reason to go back to set an example," Ruiz said.

Ruiz is one of nine Answer Scholarship recipients graduating this year.

She will be walking across the stage with her classmates on May 11.
