CHARLOTTE -- Police are investigating a deadly pedestrian accident near Lake Wylie.

It happened Tuesday morning at Youngblood Road and Buckthorne Ridge Lane.

Both roads are closed.

Officials confirm that the pedestrian killed was an Olympic High student.

Witnesses say the student was running to catch the school bus, and that students onboard saw the accident happen.

A mother of one of those students on the bus said she several parents have complained about the safety in the area.

"We live in an area where safety is a concern right now. Clearly it's not. We've complained about it, and nothing has happened," said the mother.

Neighbors and parents say street lighting and vehicle speed have been a concern for them in the past.

Police say the driver of the car is cooperating with the investigation. Neither alcohol nor speed is believed to be a factor. There is no word yet or whether or not the driver will be charged.

CMS said in a statement, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends at this time. Counseling support is available to students at  the school this morning."
