CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Way before those lovely bouquets reach your desk at work or your door step, florists wake up and smell the flowers way before you do.

According to the National Retail Association, Americans could spend up to $2 billion on floral arrangements, which makes florists kick it up to high gear to meet the demand.

Although one North Carolina city made Instacart’s list for “Least Romantic City,” Shelly Boyd, owner of Flowers of Charlotte says that is not the case.

She says her sales show differently; however, she says first-time buyers tend to buy flowers around the holiday. To that, Boyd says flowers should be given throughout the year.

“You shouldn’t have a holiday just to tell you to buy flowers,” she said.

Just after the Super Bowl is when she says the orders start rolling in with some messages saying “Sorry, I was a jerk,” from male customers.

Nichole, an employee, says she makes about 200 arrangements each day around the holiday. According to her, on a normal day, each worker creates about 100 arrangements. Last year, the business made 1,200 deliveries varying in colors, smells and types.

Outside of roses, carnations, daises and stargazers are favorites. Boyd says pinks and purples are also common colors for arrangements.

Flowers of Charlotte is located at 800 Clanton Rd Suite Q, Charlotte, NC 28217.
