Charlotte-Douglas International Airport and Central Piedmont Community College announced a $135,000 grant from JPMorgan Chase, Thursday, to train Charlotte aviation department employees in electrical systems, welding, and OSHA certifications.

There's more than 1,000 positions open in electrical engineering and welding in the Charlotte area, according to Charlotte Works.

“I think the biggest thing is that we're going to have to get to more communities that have been segregated for economic reasons,” President & CEO of Charlotte Works Patrick Graham said. “I think a lot of those communities actually have untapped talent that we need to access in order to fulfill some of those business needs."

More than 100 Charlotte aviation department employees are expected to complete 400 hours of training by the end of May.

JPMorgan Chase has invested more than $800,000 in CPCC workforce programs in the last 3 years.
