MEBANE, N.C. -- Alamance Burlington Schools are worried a new housing development will make their overcrowding issues worse.
Mebane city council approved plans for building a development containing more than 700 homes and town homes.
In the last few days, 11 new students enrolled at South Mebane Elementary School and some officials say the growing number of students is becoming an issue.
Principal, Rebecca Royal, says she's noticed overcrowding has started to affect students. "We're seeing as we continue to grow, that we're starting to lose our effectiveness," Royal says. "[Effectiveness] to know the children deeply. To build those close relationships and as a staff to remain connected."
Most of the district schools are well over capacity. School officials hope people will vote to support a $150 million dollar bond to build a new high school.
"Every corner of the county will get something out of this bond. So it's not that we're just doing something for the east or the center,” says Superintendent Dr. William Harrison. “Or for Burlington or for Elon. We're doing something for each corner of Alamance County. So everyone benefits."
The district hopes to have the bond on the November ballot.
