RALEIGH -- A Raleigh man who said he thought he killed his wife after taking cold medicine appears before a judge.
29-year-old Matthew Phelps faces a first degree murder charge.
Friends and family looked on during proceedings.
During a 911 call last Friday, Phelps told the dispatcher he woke up covered in blood after he had a dream his wife was dead on the floor and that he took cold medicine before going to sleep.
Phelps' lawyer says his client is still in shock.
"He's doing probably about as well as you would consider, which means he's been through a hell of a trauma and he's still kind of recovering from that particular trauma,” said Phelps lawyer.
Phelps is in custody without bond.
His next court appearance is September 25.
