NAGS HEAD, N.C. -- A photo posted on Facebook late on Monday is receiving a lot of attention and debate among social media users.

The photo, posted by “Alex Lex OBX photographer,” shows an enormous wave, what looks like a tsunami, behind Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head.

The photographer captioned the picture, “Hurricane Jose's 30ft waves hit the Jennette's pier 9/18/2017 Nags Head, NC.”

Though the frightening post looks like it could be real, pier officials responded in their own Facebook post, confirming that the picture is Photoshopped.

“Hurricane Jose -- The worst of the storm is brushing past the Outer Banks and we're experiencing high winds, waves and ocean over wash in several places along N.C. 12 in Nags Head. Ocean waves are not, however, crashing over the end of the pier as portrayed on social media by a local photographer,” said Jennette's Pier officials.

Other posts on photographer Alex Lex's Facebook page appear to follow the same style, displaying actual scenes from the Outer Banks with unreal or unrealistic elements added in.

Just a few days ago, the photographer posted a picture of a roller coaster high above the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse with the caption "Like & Share this post to get chance to win 5 FREE tickets at "Hatteras Roller Coaster" park." However, no such amusement park exists.

The pier photo post has received more than 16,000 likes and more than 100,000 shares since it was first shared Monday afternoon.
