CHARLOTTE -- This weekend as we remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream, one Charlottean reflected on a dream he never thought he'd have.

"But never in his wildest dreams did he ever think that he would end up sitting in the cabinet of first African-American president and serving as the U.S Secretary of Transportation,” said Anthony Foxx.

Outgoing U.S. Transportation Secretary Foxx marked his last trip in the position to Charlotte.

"This city is an incredible place. It’s the place that helped me learn how to be connected to other people,” said Foxx.

Before becoming transportation secretary, Foxx served as Charlotte's mayor from 2009 to 2013. As he prepares to leave the White House, Foxx said he doesn't have any regrets.

"In every role whether it's mayor or city council or secretary of transportation, I can honestly say when 12:01 on Jan. 20 comes, I will not ask myself any questions about things I could of, should of done,” said Foxx. “I feel like I have done everything possible to move the needle for the American people"

Foxx said he's proud of his team at U.S Department of Transportation and their advancements in technology and safety. He's said he's also proud of transit projects happening back in the Queen City like the expansion of the gold line street car.

"We've been working hard to create more ladders of opportunity for people and this project is actually an example of transportation projects that can undo some of the damage that was done 50, 60, 70 years ago as communities were divided based on infrastructure,” said Foxx.

For now, Foxx said he and his family will remain in Washington, D.C. as he figures out what's next

"Whatever I do, I'll find a way to help people and try to do good things for our community," he said.
