ST. LOUIS — The Interstate 70 Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge across the Mississippi River between Illinois and Missouri has reopened in both directions, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) after the bridge was closed earlier this week due to an abondoned warehouse fire.

There appears to be some light smoke coming out of the roof of the abondoned warehouse on a MoDOT camera. The building located at the 1800 block of N. Broadway caught fire Monday.

It is unclear if the fire is completely out.

Smoke from the fire at the abandoned six-story warehouse near the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge had closed all lanes spanning the Mississippi River, according to officials.

The scent of smoke and a light haze could be seen in the area as well on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the St. Louis Fire Department confirmed demolition crews arrived and began knocking down chunks of the brick walled six-story warehouse that are closest to I-70. This allowed firefighters to "overhaul" the building, which is the process of removing layers so crews can access the fires more easily.

Several portions of the warehouse also have collapsed. More smoke billowed out of the building and has spread throughout downtown.

Fire crews began working the scene at the warehouse at Broadway and Mullanphy on Monday afternoon when they found fires on the second and third floors.

Fire officials tell Spectrum News there is no official cause as of Tuesday. There also have been unhoused people living in the building from time to time, but it is unclear if any where there at the time of the fire. Officials also say there was a lot of evidence of wire scrapping.

MoDOT encourages drivers to use the Chain of Rocks Bridge, McKinley Bridge, MLK Bridge, Eads Bridge, Jefferson Barracks Bridge or the Poplar Street Bridge as alternatives.
