You don't have to travel south beyond the Mason-Dixon line to have a taste of delicious barbecue. Just head to the banks of the Hudson River and find yourself some good grub in Fort Montgomery at Barnstormer Barbeque.
"I opened up in October of 1998 and we were in Newburgh for ten years. Then we moved here in 2008 and we've been in this location in Fort Montgomery since then," said Geoff Provan, the owner and head chef.
You'll want to come hungry to this establishment where everything is done on site.
"What we're doing here is authentic pit smoked barbecue. So, we're making our own barbecue sauce, we're making everything from scratch. We make our own rub, we make our own ribs. Everything from start to finish is made here in house. We do a lot of produce that's sourced locally," said Provan.
Prefer Texas barbecue? More of a Carolina fan? You can get it all and more from their menu.
"We kind of hit a few different styles. We're not rooted in one particular style. So we have a little brisket on there -- that's inspired by Texas. We have some ribs on there -- that's inspired by Kansas City. We do a Carolina vinegar style pork inspired by some Carolina flavor. So, we're kind of across the board with a mix of style. I think what we have is our own unique Hudson Valley style of barbecue here that kind of has a flavor from everywhere else. We have some seafood on the menu so it's not limited to BBQ," said Provan.
At the end of your meal, the owner and staff hopes that you'll feel like you went on a trip without ever leaving the Hudson Valley.
"I want them to come in here and feel like that if they've ever visited down south, that they have something right in their backyard that reminds them of being back down south," Provan said.
