Believe it or not, it's almost time to get those air conditioners and cooling systems running, which could mean higher bills, but there are ways to combat that.
"Best thing to do is have a programmable thermostat and set the times when you're not home or when you're home," Licensed Electrician Rob O'Keefe said. "Have the air conditioning come on an hour before you come home. You don't want to swing it too much, but you can change the settings a little bit to your preference."
Another trick to keep it cool this warm weather season, calls for a little change of direction.
"A lot of ceiling fans have a button on there that you can change the direction of the ceiling fan," O'Keefe said. "So when you look at your ceiling fan you would like to see a counter clockwise motion and that will push air down and that will make you feel a little cooler."
Sometimes warm weather means big storms, so you should be prepared for those as well.
"During a thunder storm or a heavy storm try and unplug big ticket items, like electronics," O'Keefe said. "Try and unplug it so you can try and save it like a computer or television. If you are using a generator, you want to make sure that it's the proper generator for that installation. You have to make sure you have a manual or automatic transfer switch. You want them to be vented away from the house, so you don't consume the carbon monoxide from them."
However, it's not just electricity inside your home that you need to be concerned about. You also should be making sure your outdoor living spaces are ready, especially if you have a pool.
"If you have an existing pool things you want to look for is that there are no frayed wires on the pool pump motor," O'Keefe said. "You want make sure it's properly grounded. If you're not sure, you can call a certified electrician to make sure the pool is in a good safe working order. You want to avoid extension cords while doing yard work, plugging in things and having them close to the pool or if they're in poor condition. You don't want them getting into the pool."
Also, if you have a sub pump system, it's wise to get that checked this time of year.
