NATIONAL – A pretty embarrassing mix-up happened on the Oscars’ red carpet Sunday night in an attempt to pay a compliment.

The website “Total Beauty” tweeted a picture of comedian and actress Whoopi Goldberg.

Its caption read "We had no idea Oprah was tatted, and we love it."

The LA-based company confused Whoopi Goldberg with Oprah Winfrey. Reaction was swift before the tweet was deleted.

A UCLA professor tweeted "Could not have picked a worse year for a gaffe like this one."

It's a reference to the diversity controversy at the Oscars.

Gayle King tweeted a picture of best friend Winfrey looking confused, holding a cellphone picture of Goldberg.

'Total beauty' posted an apology tweet to Oprah and Whoopi, "as well as everyone we've offended."

The company also said it will donate $10,000 to a charity of Goldberg and Winfrey's choice.
