Whether it's crafting balloon animals or transforming kids into their favorite superhero, Shanee Navon does whatever she can to engage young Staten Islanders.

"To make kids come be involved," said Shanee Navon, our Staten Islander of the Week. "It makes them more attentive and want to learn."

Navon is a volunteer with the trauma department at Richmond University Medical Center.

For the last several months, she's been helping hospital staff spread important health information to the public.

"The importance of wearing helmets on bicycles or to the elderly, teaching them how to get more balance and not fall," said Navon.  "As long as I'm getting across to somebody and we are getting across to somebody then I feel like the job is done."

Navon donates her time to support hospital staff as they care for patients in the trauma department.

She also helps out on health fairs and community outreach events like this car seat safety check.

Navon's supervisors say her can-do attitude goes a long way.

"She's been very helpful and influential especially at the health fair events," said Christopher Cruz with the RUMC Trauma Department. "Really bringing the kids more to the table so we can hand out our health information to the parents and really get our message across."

RUMC leaders say they're impressed with Navon's efforts throughout the hospital.

"It shows you, number 1, the inner characteristics of the individual," said RUMC President & CEO Daniel Messina. "It really paints a great, great picture of how successful this person is going to be in the future."

And she does it all while balancing a full plate at the College of Staten Island.

"I'm a photography major but also I'm pre-med, so with that, I'm also a double minor in American sign language and biochemistry," said Navon.

Still, she says there's nothing else she rather be doing with her time outside the classroom.

"With all that I do this is probably the most valuable to me," she said.

And so, for committing herself to the health and safety of residents across the borough, Shanee Navon is our Staten Islander of the Week.
