WIMBERLEY, Texas — In Wimberley, another rabid fox was found a few weeks after a similar incident in San Marcos.

A fox showing strange behavior tested positive for rabies by the Department of State Health Services on Friday, according to the Hays County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO).

It’s reported that the fox has had no human contact.

The fox was found at Palo Pinto Path in Wimberley, near Cypress Creek.

Officials ask if you or anyone you know has come in contact with the rabid fox to contact the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, Animal Control Unit at 512-393-7896, the Hays County Health Department Epidemiology Department at 512-393-5520 option 3 or Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Control at 254-778-6744.

On May 9, a fox in Wimberley bit a person near a home on Cypress Creek Lane and later tested positive for rabies. A rabid fox near the Purgatory Creek Natural Area also bit two people in San Marcos on May 11.

Two rabid bats were also found in Cedar Park back in May, about a week apart. Authorities stated that, at the time of the incident, there was no contact with the bats.

Transmitted through the bite or scratch of a rabid animal, rabies is a potentially fatal viral disease affecting the nervous system.

Treating the virus promptly is crucial to prevent infection, as the illness is fatal if symptoms develop.

Initial symptoms can be flu-like, involving fever, headache, weakness and occasional bite discomfort.
