SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio is known as “Military City USA,” and according to a new survey, it is also home to a cemetery Americans say they would most like to visit on Memorial Day.
Choice Mutual, a life insurance agency, released its findings on which burial sites Americans were most likely to visit on Memorial Day. Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio came in at No. 9 on the list.
“There’s something about walking through a military cemetery on Memorial Day that makes you slow down. The quiet isn’t just silence — it’s reverence,” Choice Mutual said in its findings. “In honor of Memorial Day, we surveyed Americans to find out which cemeteries they would most like to visit. Some cemeteries are famous, others less so, but each carries its own kind of meaning.”
Choice Mutual surveyed over 3,000 Americans to find out and rank the burial sites they would most likely visit on Memorial Day. Arlington National Cemetery came in at No. 1 and Gettysburg National Cemetery was No. 2.
“This isn’t just about tourism or tradition. These cemeteries matter because of what they make people feel. They remind us that service is personal,” Choice Mutual said. “That loss is national. And that remembrance doesn’t always need words — it requires presence. Whether surrounded by mountains or the ocean, these grounds quietly ask us to pause — and not forget.”
Overall, Texas was one of the states that appeared most frequently in Choice Mutual's findings next to California, Virginia, Montana and Alaska.
Another Texas site to make the list was the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene at No. 15.
