TERRELL, Texas — A Terrell police officer was shot and killed Sunday evening during a traffic stop, authorities report.

Officer Jacob Candanoza initiated a traffic stop at 11 p.m. on Dec. 8 in the 1600 block of S. State Highway 34, the Terrell Police Department said in a Facebook post on Monday.

A cover unit was dispatched upon Candanoza’s request and within moments, police received two calls about an officer being shot. Officers were dispatched along with Terrell Fire Department and CareFlite.

Cover officers observe suspects and protect officers.

Officers then arrived on the scene and confirmed Candanoza had been shot. First responders administered medical attention and Candanoza was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hospital in nearby Forney, where he succumbed to his injuries.

“Our deepest condolences go out to his family as they navigate this tragic time,” the post from Terrell Police Department reads.
