RUSK COUNTY, Texas — Police in Rusk County, Texas, report an illegal cockfighting bust on July 4 ended with 13 people arrested and the seizure of 87 roosters.
According to the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office, a 911 call that day sent deputies to an address where a large group of men had gathered at a creek bottom. Roosters in cages were observed throughout the area.
Many of the men ran into nearby woods when deputies arrived but several were captured. In addition to the 13 arrests, deputies cited 23 people for being at the scene during a cockfighting event.
Along with the rooster seizures, deputies seized nine vehicles and cash.
Cockfighting is a Class A misdemeanor in Texas and is punishable by a fine of up to $4,000 and up to a year in jail.
