Today's Big Stories
Tropical Storm Beryl unleashed heavy rains and powerful winds across the state of Texas on Monday, knocking out power to more than 2 million homes and businesses and flooding streets with fast-rising waters as first responders raced to rescue stranded residents.
At least two people were killed. The National Hurricane Center said damaging winds and flash flooding will continue as Beryl continues pushing inland.
2. Third suspect arrested in connection to Round Rock shooting at Juneteenth celebration
A third suspect has been arrested in connection to a shooting at a Juneteenth celebration in Round Rock last month where two people were killed and 14 were injured. Keshawn Dixon, 18, was arrested in Killeen on Saturday, according to a post on X, formerly Twitter, from the Round Rock Police Department. Dixon was taken to the Bell County Jail.
Dixon is the third suspect to be arrested in connection to the June 15 shooting that took place at Old Settlers Park where people gathered to celebrate the Juneteenth holiday.
3. National abortion ban splits Trump campaign, GOP activists writing party platform
Republicans may remove a vow to ban abortion from their party platform for the first time in 40 years at the behest of former President Donald Trump, who has refused to support such a ban even as he takes credit for the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Trump's campaign wants the group drafting this year's platform to produce a shorter document without statements favored by many conservatives but potentially unpopular with the broader electorate.
4. These are the congressional Democrats calling on Biden to leave presidential race
At least 10 Democratic members of Congress have called for President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race following his devastating debate performance.
On Monday, Biden sent a letter to Democratic lawmakers saying he is “firmly committed to staying in this race” and calling for an “end” to speculation within the party about the future of his candidacy.
