TEXAS — If you’ve been putting off registering your vehicle in Texas the clock is quickly winding down.

The temporary coronavirus pandemic vehicle title and registration waiver Gov. Greg Abbott announced in March 2020 is set to expire on Wednesday, April 14.

That means if your vehicle registration is expired you’ve got until Wednesday to make things right. After that, police will start ticketing for vehicles without a current registration sticker or current registration receipt.

You’ve got three registration options, two of which are viable before the waiver expires.

  1. Do it online. Visit www.TxDMV.gov/register or www.Texas.gov. Online registration is available up to nine months past your registration expiration date.
  2. In person. Visit the office of your local tax assessor-collector. In some Texas counties, vehicle registration is available at other locations such as grocery stores.
  3. Mail. Return the bottom portion of your vehicle registration form, payment and other needed information to your county tax assessor-collector.

Don’t forget that in Texas your vehicle must pass a smog test before you can register it. You can obtain an inspection at any state vehicle inspection station. There are some cases in which a vehicle is exempt from inspection, however. The temporary waiver covers the following services:

  • Initial vehicle registration.
  • Vehicle registration renewal.
  • Vehicle titling.
  • Renewal of permanent disabled parking placards
  • 30-day temporary permits.
