SAN ANTONIO – Lotus Rios started the Harlandale Sunshine Pantry in the heart of Southside San Antonio last October.

“We’re seeing all walks of life. It’s people whose hours were cut, people who got things repossessed,” said Rios.

She and her family have struggled financially themselves, but she still manages to leave what she can for her community because she knows the need is great. Rios said people will take items one day and come back the next day to donate for others.

“There’s not enough money sometimes for food when you’re trying to pay your bills and pay for your medications,” said Rios, especially for those with a fixed income.

That’s why she was disappointed when her small pantry was vandalized on Christmas Day. Coats and blankets were stolen – she says the vandals even tried to steal the mini-fridge.

“You’re not just taking from us, you’re taking from the whole community,” Rios explained.

After sharing news of the vandalism on social media, Rios received enough donations to be able to purchase a full size fridge. She said that it will be harder for people to steal.

Since the pantry has been up, she’s heard from community members that say the pantry has allowed them to feed their children for a few days.

“Remember you can be the light for yourself and others by doing just one small act, to be kind,” said Rios.

She said she will continue spreading the kindness as long as she can.

“If you can’t find the sunshine, be the sunshine,” Rios said.
