SAN ANTONIO — The University Health system in San Antonio is preparing to begin vaccinating those individuals who fall in the Phase 1B COVID-19 vaccination plan – adults 65 years old and up and people over 18 who have chronic conditions.

Those vaccinations are slated to begin Monday, but according to University Health’s website, due to overwhelming response, there are currently no appointments available.

However, University Health said, when slots do become available announcements will be made via social media and local news outlets.

Earlier in the week, the Texas Department of State Health Services expanded vaccinations from Phase 1A to 1B. Phase 1A includes frontline health care workers and residents of long-term care facilities.

Chronic conditions that would place people in 1B include cancer, chronic kidney disease, COPD, heart disease, obesity and severe obesity, solid organ transplantation, pregnancy, sickle cell disease, and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

According to San Antonio Assistant City Manager Dr. Colleen Bridger, there are not yet enough vaccines on hand to vaccinate people in 1B on a large scale but there will be mass vaccination events when providers receive sufficient supply.
